Common Winter Car Problems

A car that is buried in snow

There are a lot of things that can go wrong in the winter. Cold temperatures can be brutal on a car. Your car is made up of a lot of moving parts and a lot of those parts are sensitive to temperatures. Most people who live in the cold know what to look out for, but a refresher course never hurts.

Before winter hits, you should check over your car once or twice. If you can spot any minor problems before the snow falls, then you can save yourself some time and money. We will walk you through some of the most common problems you will face in winter. This will help you know what to look for and keep an eye on.

Common Winter Car Problems

One of the first issues you will notice is also one of the easiest to fix. Cold air will sap the tire pressure from your car, but a simple refill when they get too low should fix things. If you notice you are losing pressure quickly, then it might be worth having a professional inspect your tires. You should also be careful with your windshield wipers. It’s common for them to accidentally break if you try to pry them off of a frozen windshield or use them to scrape at heavy ice. Propping the wiper blades up overnight is an easy way to avoid that.

Car battery being tested

The other mechanical problems can be a bit more troublesome. The severe cold can affect your battery and spark plugs. They are both susceptible to the cold, so it’s important to check on them. If your battery struggles to start now, then you should replace it as soon as you can. The winter will only make it harder on your battery. Old and worn-out spark plugs will also perform worse in winter.
